The Prepared Environment and Sensorial Materials – From Perception to Intelligence
This practical seminar explores the importance of the prepared environment and sensorial materials in Montessori education for children aged 3–6. Through touching, seeing, hearing, comparing and classifying, the child organises impressions and develops a deeper understanding of the world.
“The senses, being explorers of the world, open the way to knowledge.”
— Maria Montessori, The Absorbent Mind
We will examine how a carefully prepared environment supports concentration, independence and purposeful activity. Participants will become familiar with selected sensorial materials, their developmental aims and their connections to language, mathematics and culture.
Hands-on practice is a central part of the seminar. Participants will have time to explore, experience and discover the materials for themselves and practise presenting them to one another. Through this process, we want participants to gain a deeper understanding of the materials and experience the joy and fascination that sensorial exploration can bring.
We also aim to connect the course content directly to the participants’ own Montessori environments, making the course relevant and applicable to their daily practice. The seminar combines theoretical input, demonstrations, practical exercises and professional reflection.
